Chapter 36 · Professional Trading System

Market scene
Lin finally finds a profitable rule on practice data. Before connecting it to trading software, he realizes unanswered questions remain: what if data stops? An order's status is unknown? Profits mainly came from a rising market? Who decides whether to continue after a month?
The rule is one sentence surrounded by unanswered questions. Does pressing Run create a system?
Your decision
You have only a rule that once profited. What comes next?
Observe the result
One passing component cannot certify the rest. Attractive backtests with unexplained costs fail validation. Bad data and unknown positions fail risk/execution. Unreconciled PnL fails attribution.
Stopping progression is a normal system outcome. Failure does not prove a strategy permanently worthless; it means evidence currently cannot justify the next stage's risk.
The mechanism
Connect the course into a full route: observe prices and participants, form a hypothesis, translate it into then-available signals, test net of costs and OOS, bound permitted risks, reconcile execution, decompose PnL, and review.
- Research hypothesis
- Validation evidence
- Risk budget
- Execution reconciliation
- PnL attribution
- Review and new questions
↺ Research hypothesis · Keep versions
Preserve old hypotheses, parameters, windows, and decisions each iteration. Otherwise reviews see only the latest polished rule, hiding whether improvements reflect learning or repeatedly fitting the same results.
This chapter's checkboxes mean “materials available” and open gates sequentially. Failure clears that gate and later passing states. It is an evidence self-check, not deployment, account connectivity, or live-trading authorization.
| Gate | Minimum output | If not passed |
|---|---|---|
| Research | Falsifiable hypothesis, mechanism, available data | Redefine the question |
| Validation | OOS, costs, robustness, paper records | Stay in research/validation |
| Risk | Layered limits, stop/restart rules | Reject new risk |
| Execution | Targets, actual fills, remainders, fees | Reconcile; do not blindly resend |
| Attribution | Nine-component bridge and independent total | Investigate residuals; pause capital increases |
| Review | Separate process/outcome scores, improvements, versions | Revise process and research again |
What it is called
Real markets
The Chapter 15 incident exposes process/system risk. Strategy research and production changes are distinct gates; deployment checks, stop permissions, and abnormal-state reconciliation are all necessary.
Chapter 16 identifies venue risk. Know where assets and orders sit and what actions venue failures trigger, rather than asking only for the next price direction.
Chapter 18's cascading sales show interactions among positions, depth, and forced exits. Review failed budget/execution assumptions and feed evidence back to research and stress tests.
Hands-on
Confirm a virtual strategy's materials gate by gate. Ticking a box is self-checking, not trading authorization or automatic promotion.
Currently missing: Research. Later gates remain unpassed.

- Choose a virtual strategy and name each gate's file or record before checking evidence present.
- Simulate execution failure; explain why later attribution/review cannot retain earlier passing states.
- Simulate unexplained attribution residuals; identify reconciliation sources and restart conditions.
- Copy the checklist and turn failed gates into concrete tasks. Organize deliverables with the Foundation handbook.

Connect six gates and leave inspectable materials at each. The goal is knowing how to stop, investigate, and restart when evidence is insufficient or faults arise—not guaranteeing continuous profits.
Research-to-production separates data and parameter versions, training/validation windows, costs, and launch standards. Paper tests latency and execution consistency; shadow compares theory with executable outcomes for identical signals. Larger-risk stages require advance acceptance; see Advanced F.
Continue the project: provide evidence at research-to-production gates.
Strategy Governance assigns owners, change records, retirement criteria, and review authority. A risk committee addresses shared portfolio risks, not on-site execution reconciliation. Separate stop triggers, existing-risk treatment, and restart authority. Preserve traceable failure records.
Continue the project: connect committee, shutdown, and restart permissions.
Questions to take away
Chapter self-test
Research, validation, risk, execution, attribution, and review. New review questions return to research, retaining existing versions.
No. OOS, cost, robustness, and paper evidence, plus explicit risk/execution constraints, remain missing.
It may already have filled. Reconcile venue reports, orders, and positions first to avoid duplicate risk.
No. Profit is an outcome; a violation is behavior against advance rules. Evaluate separately and repair process.
One idea to take away
Professional trading is a self-updating process: research, validation, risk control, execution, attribution, review, and repeat—not an eternally effective strategy.

Read means only that you confirm reading this chapter. Self-tests are your assessments against reference conclusions. Neither certifies mastery or professional level. Each click retains a timestamped local record.
